MDE Partnership with Smiths Detection for HCVP Systems Installation at Tema Harbour

In January 2026, Modern Digital Electronics Limited (MDE) received it’s partners from Smiths Detection as part of ongoing preparations for the proposed installation of Heavy Cargo and Vehicle Portal (HCVP) systems at Terminal 3 of the Meridian Port Services (MPS Yard), Tema Harbour. The two-day engagement marked a significant milestone in advancing the project and aligning all stakeholders on scope, timelines, and responsibilities.

Stakeholder Engagement and Site Assessment

The Smiths Detection delegation included the Key Accounts Manager, IT personnel, and the Project Manager. On the first day, the joint MDE–Smiths Detection team met with the client, MPS, to discuss key aspects of the project. Discussions focused on the overall installation plan, project requirements, and expectations from all parties.

Following the meeting, the team conducted a site visit to assess the proposed installation area at Terminal 3. This allowed for a practical evaluation of the location and helped clarify preparatory needs ahead of the installation.

Installation and Timeline Alignment

A dedicated session was held with the MPS Civil Engineering Department to fine-tune the project timelines. During this engagement, it was agreed that civil works would commence in the second quarter through to the third quarter 2026. These works will include site construction, block works, and all necessary preparations ahead of the installation phase.

The installation of the new HCVP systems is scheduled to begin and conclude in the last quarter of 2026, ensuring sufficient time for testing and commissioning.

As part of the overall scope, the six existing HCVP systems that is currently maintained by MDE at the MPS Yard will also be upgraded during the installation of the two new systems, enhancing overall operational efficiency.

The engagement concluded with a comprehensive site inspection by the entire team to confirm readiness and alignment with the proposed plans.

This collaborative engagement underscores MDE’s commitment to delivering world-class security and inspection solutions through strong partnerships and meticulous project planning.

Why MDE?

What distinguishes MDE is not just the equipment deployed, but the depth of local technical ownership, operational continuity, and OEM-aligned execution.

These engagements also reflect MDE’s investment in local engineering talent, building teams capable of operating at international standards while remaining grounded in the realities of African port operations.
